Learning for life!

Hello Grade Fours,

As you know, life is all about learning. Just because you've become a teacher doesn't mean that you stop learning! I learn from all of you each and every day. I also learn a lot of new things on the web. One website that I recently discovered is Glogster. This is a really awesome and interactive way to display information! It is sort of like an interactive poster. One of my favourite things about it is that you can animate what you put on there. You can use this website to display information and in the coming weeks, you can look forward to using it in class. We will soon be working on Medieval Times. I think that Glogster would be a great way to display everything we've learned about Medieval Times. Teachers are constantly developing their Technological Knowledge, and I look forward to sharing with you as I learn more and more. Please be sure to share any technology that you've learned about with me- often, students know more about technology than the teachers! I hope that you check out Glogster and find an interesting and unique way to use it. Remember, you don't always have to use it in the way that I have shown you- I am always up for new suggestions!

Have a great night!

Food Chain

Hello Grade Fours!

This week we have been learning about how food chains work. We know that every link in a food chain is very important to everyone in the chain. If one part dies, the rest of the food chain will struggle to survive as well. Please check out this food chain game on EcoKids. The information reviews what we've talked about in class, and the game tests you to see what you've really learned about food chains! Be sure to click both the forest and the northern food chain. When you've played this game, make sure to come and tell me about it so that I know you've been reviewing your food chain facts. Have fun!

Food Chain Game

Caregivers:

This game is an excellent method to see how much your child has learned about food chains. It relates to the curriculum expectation that students are able to build food chains consisting of different plants and animals. It also helps them to investigate the interdependence of plants and animals within specific communities (for example, a forest food chain), which is another curriculum expectation. Above is an example of a larger food chain, as this game explores. Playing the game yourself is an excellent way to review what your child has been learning in school.

Have a great day!

Patterns, patterns, patterns...

Hello Grade Fours!

For the past little while, we have been working on patterns in math class. It is a fun and exciting topic that can take many shapes and forms. Remember the art project we created with the patterns in circles? Did you realize that this also was a math activity? You can find and learn about patterns in many different ways! Here is a fun game that will allow you to test what you've learned about patterns and see if you can figure out what's coming next. Look closely! Some of them can get tricky!

Good luck! Happy Patterning!

Caregivers: In class, we have completed many different pattern activities. These have been linked cross-curricular with many different subjects, including art. The students have learned to see patterns everywhere. Try testing their knowledge- look for patterns in and around your house and see if your child can predict what's coming next! This game above will help continue their knowledge about patterns. It covers two curriculum expectations; namely, predicting geometric and numeric patterns, and extending repeating patterns through investigation including a variety of tools.

Have a great day!

These are a few of my favourite things...

Hello Grade Fours!

Have you ever wondered what kinds of things I, Miss Sybblis, like to do outside of school? Here are a few links to some of my favourite things!

IMDB- Internet Movie Database- I absolutely love to watch movies and television. Some of my favourite movies are Titanic, Armageddon, Step Mom and Grease. Some of the best TV shows (in my opinion!) are Grey's Anatomy, Parenthood and Dancing with the Stars! The great thing about IMDB is that it offers me facts and trivia about all of these things. It allows me to find out who the stars were in it, who produced it, what other things the stars are in and random trivia about the movies, television shows and celebrities.

HPL-  Hamilton Public Library- As a teacher, I am passionate about literacy. Outside of class, I love to get involved with literacy as well. Reading is one of my favourite things to do. I love all kinds of books- historical, biography, mysteries- anything!

NHL- I also love hockey! I am very sad that hockey is on a lock out right now. My favourite team is the Toronto Maple Leafs! Go Leafs go!

Have a good day!

A Great Resource For You!

Hello Friends!

Wikipedia is an excellent resource for you to use. It has tons of information on just about anything you can imagine! It is perfect for research projects, but also can answer questions that you may have about pretty much anything. I use Wikipedia almost daily- I didn't realize how much I used it until the day the website was down. Boy, did I miss it then! I always count on Wikipedia to answer my questions and provide further understanding for things I've learned about in class, from watching the news, or even heard about on the bus. The excellent thing about Wikipedia is that it offers pages in a huge variety of languages. So if you are an English Language Learner, you might find it better to read the page in your native language. Be sure to check out this page! It is a great resource for you!
